Investors are underestimating this shoemaker’s potential

Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK) has emerged as a strong competitor in the global footwear industry, capitalizing on Nike’s declining market share. Its flagship brands, Ugg and Hoka, continue to drive impressive sales and strong returns, yet the company’s below-average valuation suggests that investors remain cautious. In today’s FA Alpha Daily, we explore why the market may be underestimating DECK’s ability to sustain its performance and exceed investor expectations.

For decades, Nike (NKE) has dominated the global footwear scene with its slew of footwear offerings, ranging from specialized shoes for golf, basketball, running, and others to more casual offerings.

However, after years of market leadership, the company’s grip on the footwear industry has loosened over the past few years.

Nike’s global market share has declined from nearly 24% in 2016 to barely 19% as of 2025, losing market share to longtime rival Adidas and other players like Puma, New Balance, and Skechers.

However, established brands aren’t the only ones who have benefited from Nike’s decline.

Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK), the firm behind running shoe upstart Hoka, has also capitalized on Nike’s fading popularity.

Deckers is a footwear designer and distributor that owns and operates multiple footwear brands.

Hoka, one of the company’s flagship brands, was acquired in 2013. Known for its distinct “maximalist” aesthetic and comfortable design, the brand focuses primarily on designing and selling running shoes for men, women, and children. Ugg, on the other hand, is a brand specializing in fashion apparel, accessories, and casual footwear.

These brands drove the bulk of Deckers’ fiscal year 2026 revenue, which amounted to $5.4 billion. Ugg accounted for roughly $2.7 billion in sales while Hoka delivered $2.5 billion.

Deckers derives its revenue from one-off product purchases, distributed through wholesale partners and direct-to-consumer channels such as e-commerce and company-owned retail stores.

Both Ugg and Hoka benefit from premium pricing. Hoka’s running shoes typically sell well above $100, while Ugg’s fashion-forward identity enables it to command higher prices, with some footwear and apparel retailing for over $200.

Even though Deckers’ primary offerings are one-off purchases, the company has secured recurring revenue. Runners typically replace their shoes after reaching a certain mileage, while changing fashion cycles and seasonal trends encourage consumers to regularly update their wardrobes.

This setup has enabled Deckers to deliver strong returns over the past few years. Since its 2021 fiscal year, the company has delivered a Uniform return on assets (“ROA”) above 30%.

In FY 2026, Deckers delivered a Uniform ROA of 50% alongside an asset growth of 9%.

Despite being an above-average performer, the company trades at a below-average Uniform P/E of 10x, with the market expecting returns to drop in the next few years.

We can see this through Valens’ Embedded Expectations Analysis (“EEA”) framework.

The EEA starts by looking at a company’s current stock price. From there, we can calculate what the market expects from the company’s future cash flows. We then compare that with our own cash-flow projections.

In other words, the EEA shows how well a company has to perform in the future to be worth what the market is paying for it today.

At current valuations, investors expect Deckers’ Uniform ROA to fall by more than half to just 21% by fiscal year 2031.

Those expectations show that the market appears to be cautious around consumer spending trends. While these worries are valid, investors seem to be too pessimistic about Deckers’ future prospects.

Strong demand for Deckers’ premium brands should enable it to sustain and grow its returns for years to come, positioning it to meet and exceed investor expectations.
